This is the second such episode (that we know of) in Cardinal Cupich’s Archdiocese of Chicago following the highly publicized incident conducted at St. Vincent de Paul Parish earlier this year.
This past Sunday, the notorious Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina Parish in Chicago, officiating a public same-sex couple blessing ceremony in direct violation of Fiducia Supplicans.
The Chicago Sun Times reports that an intimate blessing ceremony between Michael Thiry and Nate Washington was held at the couple’s apartment building and included about a dozen of loved ones who enjoyed barbecue ribs, blueberry coconut margaritas and other tropical-themed food and drink.
According to Fiducia Supplicans, blessings of this nature must be “spontaneous” and private. The blessing is to be imparted on the individuals rather than their relationship in order to avoid confusing the it with marriage.
“It doesn’t feel like it’s enough, but it’s opening a door,” Thiry said. “We appreciate the door being opened a crack, and we’re hoping to push it open and walk through it.”
