Leo’s “Church of Welcome” Bans SSPX Pilgrims from Assisi and the Old Mass from St. Peter’s

A hundred or so traditional Catholics walked into Assisi last Sunday carrying wooden crosses, a statue of Our Lady, banners of St. Pius X, and the sort of religious baggage that has become increasingly troublesome in the modern Church: rosaries, Latin hymns, the Creed.

They had walked for miles.

At the Basilica of St. Francis, the pilgrimage stopped.

The priests and faithful of the Society of St. Pius X were informed that they could enter privately, individually or in small groups. What they could not do was enter as the SSPX and conclude their pilgrimage with the public singing of the Credo.

So they stood outside.

Father Gabriele D’Avino, superior of the Society’s Italian district, addressed them on the steps. Then the pilgrims sang the Creed in the square. ANSA confirmed the basic facts, as did the Franciscans themselves.

That photograph could serve as the cover illustration for the post-conciliar crisis.

Assisi has spent forty years presenting itself to the world as the capital city of religious dialogue.

But sing the Catholic Creed with the wrong Catholics?

Outside, please.
