In recently held interviews with Gaetano Masciullo of Life Site News, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò presented a stunning and candid picture of what he regards as a profound crisis within the Catholic Church: the distinction between the Papacy as a divine institution and the individual who occupies the papal office.
In context with his recent book titled The Capital Schism, Archbishop Viganò warns Catholics that the phenomenon of a “capital schism” is not the traditional separation of part of the Church from its ‘head’; on the contrary under the circumstances evident today, it is a situation in which the ‘head’ itself has separated himself from the Church’s received Tradition.
While Archbishop Viganò holds that the Papacy itself remains indefectible since it is instituted by Christ, he regards it dangerous when a Pope uses his authority in ways that undermine the very Faith and Tradition that their authority is meant to safeguard. The Pope, he rightly argues, is the custodian rather than the owner of the Depositum Fidei and therefore cannot legitimately proclaim a Gospel different from that handed down by the Church.
The entirety of the interview, posted in three parts on Archbishop Viganò’s website Exsurge Domine is a sober critique of the pontificates since Francis, and is worth reading for his straight-forward, brutally honest, and yet measured responses which point to a systemic failure since the Second Vatican Council — one that has only been exacerbated since the papacy of Pope Francis. Many of his well articulated responses succinctly & unmistakably capture the essence of what many Catholics are unable, or unwilling in some cases, to express in as many words today. His responses and his views and words should be reflected upon by all Traditional Catholics, and even every non-Traditional ‘Concerned’ Catholics.
