These days, it takes a brave bishop to defend Catholic doctrine on the family, marriage, and children. Fortunately, Virginia’s two bishops, Michael Burbidge of Arlington and Barry Knestout of Richmond, have stepped up to the plate and called on Catholics in the Commonwealth to counter the radical anti-family agenda that Virginia Democrats had kept from the public eye when they campaigned as “moderates” in last year’s statewide elections.
The Old Dominion has changed indeed since the glory days of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison… this list goes on and on, and the profound impact of that gifted generation lasted for well over a century.
But today’s not-so-quiet revolution has been long in the making. During the summer of 1961, I worked on a farm a mile from the Potomac River. It stood on the edge of the construction project that became the Beltway that now surrounds the greater Washington area.
Back then, everything west in Virginia was farmland dotted with small towns. As kids we used to ride horses on the dirt that became I-495. It was right next to the farm, and a hoot – the cops would get stuck in the mud if they tried to chase us.
But that was then. In the 65 years since, Virginia has been inundated by a tsunami of new government workers, contractors, lobbyists, activists, the Military Industrial Complex (that President Eisenhower warned us about), the foundations, government subsidiaries called “Non-Governmental Organizations” (NGOs) – yes, alas, among them Catholic Charities, USA, and Catholic Relief Services, both of which have received billions in taxpayer funding.
“Grifters,” they’re called these days. And they’re all focused on power (over us) and money (usually, ours).
Today the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God run into a big “No Trespassing” sign in Blue Virginia, and God bless these two brave bishops for standing up for truth, equal justice for all, and the American family.
