Pope Leo XIV has emphasized that Europe must take a pivotal role in any Ukraine peace deal, while delivering a scathing criticism of the Trump administration for what he characterized as efforts to “fracture” the longstanding transatlantic partnership.
Addressing reporters after discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is presently visiting European capitals to rally support for Kyiv, the American pontiff spoke about the urgent necessity for a ceasefire and detailed the Vatican’s continued efforts to assist in returning Ukrainian children taken by Russian forces.
When asked about the American peace initiative and worries that European countries were being sidelined in discussions, Leo provided his answer as he left his summer retreat at Castel Gandolfo, stressing that European participation was crucial for achieving any resolution.
“Seeking a peace agreement without including Europe in the talks is unrealistic, given the war is in Europe,” he stated.
