Malachi Martin’s highly acclaimed 1976 book entitled “Hostage to the Devil” chronicles five actual cases of demonic possession. All of the men and women involved in these cases were personally known to Fr. Martin.
One of the cases reported in Martin’s book is entitled: “The Virgin and the Girl-Fixer.” It is the story of the exorcism of a man who believed himself to be a woman. In talking about his life before his operation, Martin refers to the man as Richard. After the operation and until his exorcism is completed, Martin refers to the man as Richard/Rita. “Girl-Fixer” is the name of the demon which possessed Richard/Rita.
Martin states that exorcism involves some of the great, deep, and mysterious “givens” of our very nature and our society — in this case, gender and human love. In what Martin says was one of the most profound conversations of his life, the exorcist priest (known as Gerald) told Martin a few months before he died, “A bird doesn’t fly because it has wings. It has wings because it flies.” Martin said that we will ignore this mysterious truth in its applications to our sexuality and our gender only at our great peril.
We believe the story of “The Virgin and the Girl-Fixer” to be very relevant in today’s world, especially given the recent tragedy involving the shooting of Catholic children by a transgender man in Minneapolis. Several commentators have stated that they believe the evidence left behind by the shooter suggests a case of demonic possession.
Our hope in presenting this story to you is that friends and relatives of individuals who identify as being transgender can spot the signs of potential demonic possession and seek help for these individuals.
