Many Charlotte Catholics were overjoyed to see a beautiful altar rail installed at the Catholic High School in Charlotte under Bishop Peter Jugis in 2017. This week we learned that Charlotte’s new bishop, Michael Martin, has banned the use of the altar rail for the reception of Holy Communion at the high school.

Earlier this year, Bishop Martin cancelled the Traditional Latin Mass at four parishes in his diocese. A document was also leaked revealing the Bishop Martin planned to restrict many reverential practices in his diocese. The public uproar caused Martin to back-off for a time, but it appears now that he may be moving forward with his war on reverence.
