U.S. Bishops’ Legal Group Condemns Trump’s Immigration Enforcement Efforts

The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) strongly denounces the Trump administration’s latest directive prioritizing mass deportations in major cities, a move that places immigrant families in grave danger. In a Sunday night post, the president ordered federal immigration officials to deliver the “single largest Mass Deportation Program in History,” specifically targeting cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York — communities already reeling from heightened enforcement actions.

“We should not be afraid of our neighbors and friends,” said Bishop Jaime Soto, Chair of CLINIC’s Board of Directors and Bishop of Sacramento. “Mass deportation threatens neighborhoods and families. This is not who we have pledged to be as one nation under God with liberty and justice for all. Catholic social teaching affirms that our common human dignity is found in the social bonds that makes us good neighbors and good friends, regardless of legal status. These actions disrupt the rhythm of commerce, schooling, and prayer in many neighborhoods. It tears at the fabric of families, businesses, and churches. We must remain resolute in fostering the social bonds that make us thrive together as brothers and sisters, children of the one God who loves us all.”

The administration’s policy shift comes as reports confirm that ICE has increased daily arrests nearly fivefold in recent weeks.

“This surge in enforcement is a deliberate and dangerous attempt to sow fear, division, and scapegoating,” said Anna Gallagher, executive director of CLINIC. “Our faith calls us to welcome the stranger, protect human dignity, and uphold the sanctity of family. These raids are tearing apart the very fabric of our communities. No child should wake up afraid their parent won’t come home. No family should be targeted based on where they live.”

CLINIC is coordinating closely with partners, advocates, and faith communities to ensure immigrants know their rights and receive the support they need during this time of uncertainty and fear. CLINIC calls on all people of goodwill — and especially elected leaders of conscience — to reject this heartless and senseless campaign of mass deportation and recommit to policies that uphold human dignity, family unity, and the promise of America as a place of welcome.
