The Diocese of Owensboro’s Catholic Charities is hosting a series of informational meetings through May to instruct immigrants about how to handle encounters with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The next meeting is at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph and Paul Parish Hall, 609 E. 4th St. in Owensboro. Additional meetings will be held March 1 in Bowling Green and May 25 in Paducah.
“We are hosting ‘Know Your Rights’ presentations throughout our diocese, and everything we do is in accordance with the law, informing people of their rights, no matter what their immigration status is,” said Susan Montalvo-Gesser, an immigration attorney and director of Catholic Charities in the diocese. “We’ve always hosted ‘Know Your Rights’ presentations. We did them in 2019.
“We also host presentations on Immigration 101, for people in general to hear what the immigration regularly looks at. It’s just something we’ve always done.”
Montalvo-Gesser said the ‘Know Your Rights’ presentation is about an hour long.
“It’s just based upon what you’re required to do if you are in a car and you’re pulled over, or if somebody stops you on the street, or if somebody knocks on your door at home,” she said, “how to respond and not to live in fear and just to know what you’re supposed to do in all of these instances.”
Montalvo-Gesser said she’s not aware of any ICE activity that’s occurred in Daviess County since President Trump has taken office.
