Catholic Diocese of Yakima Bishop Joseph Tyson criticized Vice President J.D. Vance in both a letter issued earlier this week and from the pulpit during his Sunday homily.
The vice president — a convert to Catholicism — accused the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops of resettling “illegal immigrants” in order to get $100 million federal funding.
Tyson addressed Vance’s comments, and others made during the vice president’s Jan. 26 “Face the Nation” interview with CBS reporter Margaret Brennan, in his Feb. 2 homily during Masses at St. Paul Cathedral in Yakima, diocesan spokesman Msgr. Robert Siler said. A pastoral letter restating Tyson’s homily was posted Feb. 4 on the Yakima diocesan website.
“Vice President Vance’s assertion that the Catholic Church receives hundreds of millions of dollars from the United States government to resettle ‘illegal’ migrants is incorrect,” Tyson said in the pastoral letter.
