A social media post made by the Archdiocese of Washington DC welcoming Cardinal McElroy has been bombarded with negative comments. The original post reads:
Please join us in welcoming Cardinal Robert McElroy to the #WashArchdiocese! Born and raised in the San Francisco area, Cardinal McElroy was ordained to the priesthood in 1980 and has been serving as Archbishop of San Diego since 2015. We are looking forward to continuing our collective mission as Catholics with Cardinal McElroy as leader of the Church in Washington!

Here’s just a small sample of the types of responses its getting:
- Mark: Great way of telling the faithful that Pope Francis & US Bishops don’t care about abuse victims. Great way to tell the world you don’t care about the Catholic faith. A bishop who has been called a heretic by brother bishops. Utterly disgraceful.
- Leila: Covered for and protected not only a monster named McCarrick, but also a satanic ritual abuser, a satanic priest. Untold levels of spiritual abuse by McElroy.
- James: The good people of the Archdiocese of Washington should refuse to contribute a single dime as long as it has this wicked shepherd as its leader.
- Melody: You couldn’t say “screw you” to abuse victims any louder. Absolutely grievous. Anyone celebrating this choice is complicit.
- Margo: Why welcome someone so corrupt who covered up sex abuse?!??? What is wrong this Archdiocese???
- Brilhance: Coverups and corruption? Washington DC seems like the perfect fit for him then.
- Sheryl: What a terrible man. Bishops like him have betrayed the flock.
- Catl: How long, oh Lord, must we be led by wolves?
- BlackJack: An unmitigated disaster and embarrassment. We reject this appointment.
- Ronald: A horrific choice. The only silver lining is that he’s 71 so not far from the retirement age of 75.
- David: He should be imprisoned for covering up sexual abuse!
- Connor: Cardinal McElroy should immediately resign in disgrace. His reputation precedes him.
- Perkins: Why I am no longer Catholic.
- Norton: Did he come with a gift receipt so we can get store credit?
- Steevie: These are the kinds of decisions that have tarnished the reputation of our Holy Church. They allow a few corrupt individuals to infiltrate and overshadow the sincere devotion of the majority of priests. This person’s actions warrant excommunication.
