- Ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Newark in 1968.
- Served as a diocesan priest under Theodore McCarrick for 14 years (1986-2000).
- Taught scripture at Seton Hall University School of Theology for over 20 years and was rector of the College division of the Immaculate Conception Seminary (2000-2002). This is at a time when Theodore McCarrick was reportedly abusing young seminarians.
- Was made an Auxiliary Bishop of Newark and consecrated by Theodore McCarrick on September 8, 2000.
- Was named Archdiocesan Vicar General after McCarrick left Newark to become the Archbishop of Washington, D.C. In this capacity, Serratelli dealt directly with a lawsuit involving McCarrick’s sleepovers at the beach house.
- In 2008, SNAP (Survivor Network of those Abused by Priests) issued a press release critical of Serratelli’s handling of sexual abuse complaints.
- Serratelli and McCarrick both served as board members at Catholic Relief Services.
